The Taunton surname presented a real challenge.  On the marriage record of Norval Shows to Emma Taunton the name was recorded three different ways.  So the hunt began.  By fluke I found Emma with her mother and younger sister on the 1870 census records.  Her mother had remarried.   I have not found when her father died, but I think he died during the civil war.  I haven't been able to trace her sister either.  Her mother had an unusual given name, Louisiana.  From that I found marriage records, her dad's name.   I found him as a boy by hunting through the Louisiana census records in 1850 and found his parents.  There was a marriage record for them too.

The neat thing is, that after all the hunting, I obtained the death certificate for Emma from Baton Rouge, LA archives.  Her parents were listed as Louisiana Hawthorn and Asa Eli Taunton.  They are the ones I had figured out with other records.

Later note:  I have found Emma's sister she married, lived, and died in Caldwell Parish, LA.
