The Touchstone surname entered the research list after I obtained the death certificate of my husband's great, great grandfather Norval W. Shows.  In the Shows genealogy it was stated that his father was Theophilus Shows and is mother unknown.  I found her given name to be Sarah in the 1850 and 1860 census records.  The death certificated listed Norval's parents to be T. P. Shows and Sarah Tetstone.  I felt the surname of Sarah was misspelled.  After all, she died as did Theophilus before 1870 so her grandchildren never knew her (and I couldn't find anything on Tetstone).

While visiting with cousins in Mississippi I mentioned the name and was told it was probably Touchstone, there were a great many in the area in the mid 1800's.  The hunt began with census records.  There were a lot of Touchstones within a few houses of the Shows in the 1850 census of Simpson Co, MS.  One being Dempsey Touchstone.  I found a bible record for Dempsey's family which listed Sarah being the right age.  A fellow Touchstone descendant recently contacted me and said his ancestor communicated with J. B. Shows in Coryell Co, TX.  He felt they were first cousin, but didn't know how they connected.  I did!  Their mother's were sisters.
