Genealogical Research can not all be done from sitting in your home surfing the net. I've spent hours at the National Archives Branch in Ft. Worth Texas, the Grapevine Public Library, and the Dallas Public Library. I am fortunate to have some great local sources available to me, but I have always 'gotten' on the road to find more. My first trip of ancestor hunting was in the fall of 1997. Two of my aunts, an uncle, my mom, and my husband went to Missouri. My aunt, who had put together information that she had learned from other cousins, wanted me to meet all of her connections and to show me the cemeteries where many of our ancestors and their siblings were buried and places where they had lived. I learned much on that trip, not just the family history, but traveling tips.
We took pictures of many tombstones, 6 rolls to be exact. An expense you need to be aware of and one of the reasons I invested in a digital camera. I don't travel to do just research, I attend conferences, and do some sight seeing along the way. I try to see how and where my ancestors lived. We go to Lampasas, TX frequently as that is where my husband's parents live. Mounds, OK is where several of my mom's siblings live. The first and foremost is taking food and beverages with you. You never
know where you will be when it is time to eat. Don't let your self become
dehydrated. If you get so involved with what you are finding that you
don't take care of your needs, you won't last long on the road.
